Install TOVIO

There are two ways to get TOVIO: download a published build, or build the tovio command-line tool from source. Building takes about five minutes and works the same on macOS, Linux, and Windows.

Download a build

No published binary yet

TOVIO has no published binary or package-manager release. Build the tovio binary from an authorized source checkout with the steps below; this page will list signed downloads for every supported platform once the first release publishes.

Build from source

The rest of this page builds tovio from an authorized source checkout. It is the supported path for contributors, and the only path when no release is published for your platform.

What you will need

  1. Rust stable. Install it with rustup. The workspace declares Rust 1.75 as its minimum supported version; rust-toolchain.toml selects the current stable channel rather than an exact compiler release.
  2. An authorized TOVIO source checkout. The accepted public destination will be published here only after the source and release evidence gates pass.

No C toolchain required for the core

TOVIO uses rustls, not OpenSSL, so you do not need a system C/OpenSSL setup to build the offline core. The tutorial CLI includes network transport. On Windows, build that supported CLI with the MSVC toolchain (install the Visual Studio Build Tools with the Desktop C++ workload).

Step 1 — Open the source checkout

Open a terminal at the root of the authorized source checkout. The directory contains Cargo.toml, rust-toolchain.toml, crates/, and docs/.

cd /path/to/your/authorized/tovio-checkout

Step 2 — Build the binary

Build the CLI package in release mode. The first build compiles dependencies too, so give it a couple of minutes:

cargo build --release -p tovio-cli

When it finishes, the tovio binary is at target/release/tovio.

Building the offline core only

The pure engine can be checked independently with cargo check -p tovio-core. That is not a substitute for the tovio CLI used by the tutorials.

Step 3 — Put tovio on your PATH

So you can type tovio from anywhere, add the release directory to your PATH.

export PATH="$PWD/target/release:$PATH"

Add that line to your shell profile (~/.bashrc, ~/.zshrc) to make it permanent.

$env:Path = "$PWD\target\release;$env:Path"

Add the directory to your user Path in System Properties → Environment Variables to make it permanent.

Prefer not to touch PATH?

You can run any command through Cargo without installing anything:

cargo run -p tovio-cli -- <command>

For example, cargo run -p tovio-cli -- status is the same as tovio status. The tutorials write tovio <command> for brevity.

Step 4 — Confirm it runs

Check the version:

tovio --version

You should see the current package version. If you do, you are ready.

tovio 0.1.0

And to see the everyday commands at a glance:

tovio help

tovio help deliberately shows only the everyday tier — the daily-loop commands — not the full surface; TOVIO keeps the daily toolkit small on purpose. Team and advanced commands live behind tovio help --team and tovio help --advanced (or tovio help --all) when you need them.

You are set up

You have a working tovio. Next, make your first repository.

Quickstart — your first repo

tovio --version not found?

If your shell can't find tovio, the release directory isn't on your PATH yet — re-check Step 3, or just use the cargo run -p tovio-cli -- <command> form. If the build failed, confirm rustc --version reports 1.75 or newer (rustup update if not).
